so, im going on vacation and part of that will include going to disneyland and possible on similar adventures to places where bringing my semi-expensive camera isnt ideal. i have my old point and click but its suffering the hands of time and the batteries dont last very long at all. so my query for you all is, should i buy another point and click digital camera to use in such situations? i can imagine using it quite a bit, actually... i can also use it at bars, while skiing or boating, etc... without the worry i have with my "real" camera.
i technically have the money for it but its another little chunk of possible waste vs. savings. what do you think, lj people?

im watching this lifetime movie "why i wore lipstick to my mastectomy" and it reminds me sooo much of what my cousin went through. i'm crying. she's doing a walk tomorrow and it's the second or third one i've missed because i just can't drive that far for one day and make it there in time, anyway.
i wish i could be there for her :(

i got to play chief last night and take backup home call... i was useless. :D i had to keep telling the intern i didn't know and they needed to call someone else... because one patient had a seizure (wtf am i going to definitively do about that!?), another multi-day post op thoracic patient kept desatting (i think it's somewhat expected but i don't know for sure...), and another one wouldn't stay out of afib and the attending wanted something different from my last conversation with cardiology so i had to make him call them yet again... they so hate us now. :D
but i did get to stay and help with a disastrous consult. it's really quite sad. 10 minutes before i was supposed to sign out for the night and leave to play back up, there was a code called in the ICU which i just went to watch because the patient already had lines and was intubated (those are about the only things we usually contribute to codes unless it's our own patient, then we run them...). they got the patient back and i went to sign out. just after finishing signing out, my intern gets a page and it's a consult on this patient that just coded!! ahh! i was like, do they think we're going to operate on him?!
they thought he had necrotizing pancreatitis. i was like, well he might but so what? he just coded! we won't operate any time soon! for a million reasons (first being you never operate on acute pancreatitis. ever.). and by coded i don't mean a rapid response let's peek at him from the door - i mean full court ACLS press with 5 minutes of asystole. gah.
so i go through the chart with the intern (obviously the patient isn't giving us his past medical history - although he was awake! eek) and we look him over (mottled head to toe, cold extremities, tender but not rigid or acute abdomen, on 3 pressors and a bicarb drip) and call the attending. since we didn't really have a chief, she felt obligated to come in despite the fact that really we couldn't help... the primary team got an upright chest xray to rule out perforation but i'm not sure it would have mattered anyway... because a few minutes after she got there, he coded again. they got him back. he coded, they got him back, and he coded again... and the nurses and my attending told them to call their attending and stop. and he died.
so i wrote my consult note, ending with an assessment and plan of - unfortunately he passed away during our consult. and i restrained myself from writing "No surgical intervention indicated at this time."
addendum: i just called the intern - the a fib guy broke with cardizem (i don't know why we didn't start with it... i freaking hate a fib ever since i used cardizem and the patient didn't break and my mentor got mad that i didn't call cardiology first... and i was crushed because i let him down...), the seizure dude is okay and neurology is on the case, and the thoracic patient got a CT scan per the attending and is going to get a pulmonology consult this AM. so my pathetic advice to call people who know more was good :D yay.

i just ordered a 10-22mm lens :o toy!!!!!!! i debated between that, a fisheye, and a macro... and decided for now just super wide is what i NEED.
so expect more photos sometime soon ;) just in time for the foliage :D
